The American diet is generally low in zinc. Zinc is involved in hundreds of processes in the body. To name a few, zinc is essential for protein synthesis, normal brain function and contractibility of muscles. It has also been shown that a high level of constant exercise can have long-term effects on zinc metabolism. Long-term endurance training has been shown to significantly decrease resting serum zinc levels in both male and female athletes compared to sedentary controls. Excessive sweating can cause a loss of as much as 3 mg of zinc per day. Severe zinc deficiency can affect muscle function and recovery. Melissa will test your zinc status with a zinc taste test. Based on your taste response, Melissa will be able to determine if you have a zinc deficiency.
